Rhino's Surfin' Hits delivers exactly what its to-the-point title suggests, gathering 18 surf rock favorites like the Beach Boys' "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfin' U.S.A.," Dick Dale's "Miserlou," and the Surfaris' "Wipe Out." The collection gives equal time to both instrumental and vocal surf bands, featuring Jan & Dean's "Surf City" and "Ride the Wild Surf" alongside the Chantays' "Pipeline 8/

The vocal tracks include the big ones by The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, who together came to personify the whole scene by the end of the Summer of ' Surfin' U.S.A. was one of the biggest selling albums of the year at a time when rock and top 40 acts sold hardly any albums at all/5(30).

The lyrics of "Surfin' U.S.A." are a pure teen fantasy: "We'll all be gone for the summer/We're on safari to stay/Tell the teacher we're surfing/Surfin' U.S.A." It also catalogs an itinerary of great surfing spots in a manner inspired by the Chubby Checker hit "Twisting U.S.A.".

Contrast that with the Beach Boys, who were masterful at most everything they did, and certainly tried to dress the part, but the only time they really sounded like a surf band was in their instrumentals on the Surfin' U.S.A. album (). None of those tracks are featured here, and two of them were covers of Dick Dale songs anyway.
